Her Majesty The Queen opened South Bank Corporation’s innovative urban stormwater harvesting and reuse centre, Rain Bank, on Monday 24 October during her visit to Brisbane.

The industry has acknowledged Rain Bank as the most innovative urban stormwater harvesting and reuse project in Queensland and the first large-scale stormwater harvesting project in Australia to be retrofitted in a fully developed mixed-use catchment.

Rain Bank recently won the 2011 ‘eWater – Water Sensitive Urban Design Award’ at the Healthy Waterways Awards in Brisbane, affirming the innovative and bold move taken by the Corporation in developing the project. eWater sponsored the award to showcase best practice.

The project is the outcome of the five year drought, which prompted the Corporation to become an environmental leader in the field of water harvesting and reuse by future-proofing the Parklands, South Bank – a 17 hectare area situated on the banks of the Brisbane River.
