eWater CRC ecologist wins Riversymposium Young Water Scientist Award for 2007

A new way of prioritising freshwater rivers for restoration and conservation has won Simon Linke, a Queensland-based researcher with eWater CRC, the Riversymposium Young Water Scientist Award for 2007.
Simon, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Queensland, was one of three finalists contending for this year’s prestigious national award, which is sponsored by GHD and the Water Forum CRCs (Cooperative Research Centres). The $3000 award highlights the high quality of postgraduate research into water management issues, in Australian universities and CRCs. It is the culmination of an annual contest between early-career scientists who are capable researchers, clear communicators, and innovative thinkers. Dr Linke has won the award for his work developing an interactive software package to identify critical freshwater systems. His computerised analysis helps identify freshwater rivers in danger and suggests ways land owners and managers can best manage their valuable ecosystems. Professor Gary Jones, eWater CRC Chief Executive, says this award has highlighted the exceptional quality of young researchers entering the water management industry. “This is the 10th year that this award has been presented and we at eWater CRC are thrilled that one of our scientists, who trained in our forerunner the CRC for Freshwater Ecology, is this year's recipient.” A prototype for the software is currently being developed and discussions are being held with Brisbane City Council and the NSW Environmental Protection Authority to implement the system in late 2008. Simon did his postgraduate research at University of Canberra with supervisor Professor Richard Norris, and co-supervisors Professor Bob Bailey (University of Western Ontario) and Professor Chuck Hawkins (Utah State University). Simon is currently a member of the Spatial Ecology lab at the University of Queensland, and part of the eWater CRC research team on landscape analysis.
