Water proofing the South
Water Proofing the South is a localised integrated water resource management strategy based entirely in the City of Onkaparinga.

To improve the quality of stormwater runoff to the sea and to protect the area from flooding by expanding the stormwater drainage capacity, the Fyfe Group used music to determine the annual volume of water which can be harvested and to define a water balance.

Mining the advantages of water balance modelling
Mining operations are critically dependent on water, which is typically in short supply in areas where minerals are found.

To investigate the possibility of surface water supply for the Hera Gold Mine Project in Nymagee, Strategic Environmental and Engineering Consulting (SEEC) used music to undertake a water balance model for the project.

Complying with stormwater quality targets
In 2009, Brookfield Multiplex was contracted to develop and construct the Hilton Hotel and Residences: the 33-level Boulevard Tower and 57-level Orchid Tower at Hilton, Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast.

To comply with stringent Gold Coast City Council (GCCC) stormwater quality requirements, the development used music to help meet set targets of a reduction in pollutants.

Improving Water Quality in the Derwent Estuary
Two engineering consulting firms, Urban Initiatives and Aquatic Systems Management, have applied eWater’s music (model for urban stormwater improvement conceptualisation) to develop the first WSUD project under the Derwent Estuary Program (DEP).

The award-winning project is a large bioretention system at University of Tasmania (UTAS) at Sandy Bay in Hobart.

At Maroochydore, where the Maroochy River had shown signs of stress, including impacts by excessive stormwater runoff, BMT WBM assisted the Sunshine Coast Regional Council in retrofitting multiple WSUD elements into existing areas around the Maroochydore Library. The elements include porous pavements and bioretention systems as well as grassed swales, rain-gardens and rainwater tanks. music was a key tool for site selection and design stages.

Storm Consulting has developed the award-winning ‘Exfiltration Stormwater Treatment System’, an advanced stormwater treatment system where the stormwater goes through a pipe wall, then leaks out through another filter to a sand filter. The stormwater system has been applied in many locations including Ashgrove Residential Estate, Kiama CBD project at Hindmarsh Park and Kinross Business Park which is an industrial estate in Newcastle, New South Wales.

Tapping into Singapore’s urban stormwater
The ambitious project to turn Singapore’s fully urbanised environment into a water supply catchment is attracting attention from around the globe. Singapore’s Public Utilities Board (PUB) has commenced to convert Marina Bay, in the heart of the city, into a freshwater reservoir fed by stormwater runoff from a third of the metropolis. Professor Tony Wong and colleagues at Design + Planning at AECOM have been advising PUB on the implementation framework for water sensitive urban design in the catchment, and the latest science from the Facility for Advancing Water Biofiltration (FAWB) at Monash University and music have assisted in its development.

Orange City Council
Faced with continuing dry conditions over many years and the uncertainty of future rainfalls, Orange City Council has broken new ground in the harvesting of stormwater for urban use. The Council’s stormwater harvesting scheme, which kicked off in 2008, is already giving residents access to significantly more water every year and giving the Council new confidence in its ability to secure urban water supplies.

Restoring Tygum Lagoon
In 2007, a rehabilitation strategy for the lagoon was developed by BMT WBM (on behalf of Logan City Council) “to restore and maintain the recreational and environmental values of Tygum Lagoon”.
 
eWater’s urban stormwater modelling software, music (model for urban software improvements conceptualisation) was used throughout the project, highlighting key management issues for the lagoon and to assess the performance of various stormwater management strategies.
